Shabbat Parshat Balak
Dvar Torah
The Parsha focuses on Balaam the evil prophet’s failed attempts to curse the
Jewish people, which were turned into blessings. Famously Balaam proclaims “How
goodly are your tents Jacob” which Rashi, quoting the Talmud, explains to be a
reference to the fact that in the Jewish encampment, in the spirit of modesty
and respect for privacy, the openings of tents were deliberately not facing
each other.
There are many things the Jewish people can and should be proud of. This
blessing in particular though is perhaps a reminder that subtle holiness in our
day to day lives is something to strive for and has the power to inspire.
Shabbat Shalom!
